When a private transfer earns its place

A car removes interchanges but introduces a terminal meeting point and road uncertainty. Compare the complete door-to-door journey—not just the airport-to-central-London headline.

Onward transport basics for six London airports

These are planning baselines, not live service information. Open the official links for the current terminal, timetable, disruption and assistance details on your travel date.

LHR · West London

Heathrow Airport

When a transfer can suit
Door-to-door journeys with several bags, a larger party, limited mobility or an address that would otherwise need multiple changes.
Public transport baseline
Heathrow has three direct rail choices: the Elizabeth line serves several central London stations, Heathrow Express runs to Paddington, and the Piccadilly line serves all terminals. Compare the stop nearest your accommodation before defaulting to a road transfer.
Pickup detail that matters
Confirm the arrival terminal and the meeting location shown in the transfer confirmation. Heathrow has black-cab ranks outside each terminal, while pre-booked private-hire pickups use different agreed locations; do not assume the taxi rank is your meeting point.

LGW · South of London

Gatwick Airport

When a transfer can suit
A direct trip after a late or tiring arrival, groups splitting one vehicle, or accommodation that is awkward from Victoria, London Bridge or the Thameslink route.
Public transport baseline
The railway station is at South Terminal, with a free inter-terminal shuttle from North Terminal. Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink serve different London stations, so the best train depends on the location of your stay rather than one universal London terminus.
Pickup detail that matters
Check North or South Terminal and follow the exact meeting instructions. Airport Cars Gatwick offers arrivals-hall meeting when requested; other taxi and private-hire pickups use the Short Stay car parks, while Uber has separately signed areas. A pre-booked transfer does not automatically include an arrivals-hall meet-and-greet.

STN · North-east of London

Stansted Airport

When a transfer can suit
Several passengers travelling together, substantial luggage, a very early or late road itinerary, or a destination far from the Liverpool Street rail corridor.
Public transport baseline
Stansted Airport railway station is a short walk from the terminal. Stansted Express runs directly towards London Liverpool Street, while airport coaches serve several London stops. Pay-as-you-go contactless works on all Stansted Express services, but Oyster is not valid at Stansted Airport. Check the timetable, ticket options and onward journey to your actual address.
Pickup detail that matters
The airport has an on-site taxi reservation desk in international arrivals, but a separately pre-booked transfer may use its own meeting point and contact procedure. Keep the confirmation and driver contact available after baggage reclaim.

LTN · North of London

London Luton Airport

When a transfer can suit
Door-to-door travel with children, mobility equipment or heavy luggage, especially when the DART-plus-rail journey would still need another change across London.
Public transport baseline
The Luton DART connects the terminal with Luton Airport Parkway. Luton Airport Express, operated by East Midlands Railway, serves St Pancras; Thameslink also connects with Farringdon, City Thameslink, Blackfriars and London Bridge, depending on the service. Choose a through rail ticket to or from 'Luton Airport' to include DART. A rail ticket only to 'Luton Airport Parkway' needs a separate DART ticket for the terminal leg. Compare both legs and your train's actual stops.
Pickup detail that matters
Walk-up taxis use the signed rank near the terminal. A pre-booked vehicle uses the Pick Up Zone or another agreed meeting area, so check whether the quoted total includes any airport pickup charge and how far you must walk with luggage.

LCY · East London

London City Airport

When a transfer can suit
A direct journey to an address away from the DLR, passengers who cannot comfortably manage interchanges, or a group whose luggage makes public transport impractical.
Public transport baseline
London City Airport is in TfL fare Zone 3 and has its own DLR station. The DLR links into the Elizabeth line, London Underground and London Overground networks, making rail especially worth comparing for Docklands, the City and many central addresses.
Pickup detail that matters
A taxi rank is outside the terminal, but a pre-booked driver may give a separate pickup instruction. The airport is compact; use the named meeting point rather than assuming every road service collects at the rank.

SEN · East of London

London Southend Airport

When a transfer can suit
A final address beyond the Stratford–Liverpool Street rail route, a party sharing the road cost, or a journey where bags or accessibility needs make the train impractical.
Public transport baseline
Southend Airport station is beside the terminal. Greater Anglia trains run towards Stratford and London Liverpool Street, with onward TfL connections. Contactless pay-as-you-go is accepted at Southend Airport, but Oyster is not. Check the operator's current contactless map and ticket rules; child, Railcard or group fares may favour a separate ticket.
Pickup detail that matters
The airport taxi rank is directly in front of the terminal. The airport says its rank service is booked at the kiosk rather than in advance, so a separately pre-booked transfer must be followed as a distinct booking with its own meeting instructions.

Before the external search

Details that determine whether the ride works

The affiliate button cannot carry your airport, hotel, date, flight or passenger details. Enter them on the external booking page and check the selected result before payment.

Terms vary. Meeting, flight-tracking, waiting, delay, amendment and cancellation wording in the chosen offer and confirmation takes priority over general guidance.

Flight and terminal

Enter the flight number when requested so an eligible provider can identify the arrival. Recheck the terminal after any airline schedule change.

Arrival buffer

There is no single safe number of minutes after landing. Passport control, baggage and assisted travel vary; follow the product's flight-tracking and pickup-time instructions.

Every item of luggage

Include cabin bags, large cases, pushchairs, wheelchairs and sports equipment. Passenger capacity and luggage capacity are different checks.

Child-seat request

Give the child's age, height or weight and verify the appropriate seat appears in the confirmation. A request is not a guarantee until accepted.

Accessible vehicle

Describe the mobility aid, transfer needs and boarding equipment precisely. Confirm suitability with the supplier rather than relying on a generic vehicle label.

Exact meeting point

Use the terminal, zone, car park or arrivals landmark in the confirmation. An airport taxi rank and a private-hire meeting point are not always the same place.

Transfer booking checklist

Keep this beside the results page and confirmation.

  • Use the exact airport, arrival terminal if known, flight number and complete accommodation address.
  • Count every passenger and every bag, including pushchairs, wheelchairs, sports equipment and unusually large cases.
  • Check the vehicle category and luggage allowance instead of assuming a passenger count guarantees enough boot space.
  • Request any child seat by the child's age, height or weight, then obtain confirmation that the supplier can provide the suitable seat you need.
  • For an accessible vehicle, describe the wheelchair or mobility aid, whether the passenger transfers to a seat, and any ramp, lift, restraint or space requirement.
  • Read the pickup point, flight-tracking, waiting-time, delay, amendment, no-show and cancellation terms shown for the selected transfer.
  • Save the confirmation and driver or support contact somewhere available without relying on airport Wi-Fi.

Hotel to airport

Plan the return transfer backwards

A quoted drive duration is not a departure plan. Build the pickup around the flight's actual requirements and retain margin for conditions no booking platform can guarantee.

  1. 1

Start with the airline, not a generic rule

Check the airline's current check-in, bag-drop and boarding guidance for your flight and terminal. Add any time agreed for airport assistance.

  2. 2

Work backwards through the road journey

Allow for the route from the exact hotel address, traffic uncertainty, terminal access and walking from the drop-off point. Recheck planned road disruption near travel day.

  3. 3

    Make the pickup location unambiguous

Give the complete hotel or apartment address and a reachable contact number. If reception, a side entrance or a pedestrian street changes access, tell the provider in advance.

  4. 4

    Keep a fallback

Save the provider's support details and know the airport's public-transport alternative. Contact the provider if the flight, terminal, passenger count or luggage changes.

London airport transfer FAQs

Is a pre-booked transfer always better than the train?

No. Rail or DLR can be simpler when it serves a station close to your accommodation and you can manage the luggage and interchanges. A private transfer is most useful when door-to-door travel, fewer changes, group coordination or an accessibility requirement matters more than avoiding road traffic.

Should I enter my flight number?

Yes, when the booking flow asks for it. Booking.com's airport-taxi information says flight tracking depends on the flight number. Still check the selected transfer's confirmation: tracking, rescheduling and waiting arrangements are contractual details, not universal guarantees.

How long will the driver wait after landing?

Use the waiting period in the search result and final confirmation. Passport control, baggage delivery and assistance can vary, while providers can apply different waiting and no-show rules. Contact the provider promptly if the agreed meeting becomes unrealistic.

Are child seats included?

Do not assume so. State the child's age, height or weight, choose the offered seat option if available, and verify the request appears in the confirmation. If you plan to bring your own seat, confirm that the supplier permits it and that the booked vehicle has enough space.

Can I book a wheelchair-accessible transfer?

Availability depends on the route and supplier. Explain whether the chair folds, its dimensions and weight, whether the passenger can transfer, and what boarding or restraint equipment is required. Treat accessibility as confirmed only when the selected vehicle and supplier confirm those needs in writing.

When should I leave my London hotel for the airport?

Work backwards from the airline's current check-in and bag-drop guidance, then add time for the road route, traffic uncertainty, terminal access, security and any booked assistance. A transfer pickup time is not a promise that road conditions or airport queues will remain unchanged.

Sources and review note

Transport and pickup facts were reviewed against the linked airport, rail-operator, Transport for London and Booking.com information on 8–9 October 2026; last updated . Use the rail operator's current ticket rules where older airport guidance differs. Airport pages remain the source for current terminal, timetable, assistance and pickup arrangements; the selected booking result and confirmation remain the source for transfer terms.
